Ted Hierl hosts the German-American radio program, now in it's 30th year.  The Sunday morning radio program which broadcasts from WNWR 1540AM in Philadelphia, PA originally started in July of 1974, broadcasting over WTTM in Trenton, New Jersey. Due to the popularity of the program, a second radio program was added in 1982, which broadcasted over WJDM in Elizabeth, New Jersey. Both radio programs were merged into one broadcast and can now be heard from Philadelphia's WNWR station.

Ted's radio program is one of the many ways he has touched the lives of so many German-Americans and those who enjoy German culture. He has been an active member in the German-American community and given countless hours of his time to help nurture the German culture and sustain it's existence in the tri-state area.

Along with his dedicated radio work, Ted has been an active member of the Annual German Heritage Festival at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, New Jersey. His hard work and commitment have been instrumental in building the festival from an attendance of approximately 2,000 to its present attendance ranging from 10,000-15,000.  Ted not only works continuously throughout the year to coordinate and organize the festival, but has also been serving as the Master of Ceremonies during the day of the festival for the last 27 years.

In 1977, Ted founded the German-American Committee of Greater Trenton which consists of four local German Clubs. The goals and purpose of this committee include:  increased cooperation and understanding among the clubs;  a yearly scholarship drive with a dinner/dance and an awarding of scholarships to deserving students.

Ted is also responsible for coordinating concerts at the War Memorial Building in Trenton, New Jersey with Heino, Udo Jürgens, Rudolf Schock, and others over the years, to benefit the Scholarship Fund.

Ted has been involved with the Student Exchange Programs with Wesseling and Gladbeck for several years.

Ted coordinated a ten day tour with concerts and participation in the New York Steuben Parade for the Seemannschor der Marineversorgungsschule Sylt in 1985 and 1987.

Ted has arranged German participation at the annual Trenton Heritage Days in June since 1977, acted as Master of Ceremonies at those multi-ethnic events, and also donated and erected a display building where German culture was on exhibit and food was sold to benefit the German Scholarship Fund.  Attendance at the Trenton Heritage Days has ranged from 100,000-250,000.

Ted is involved with many of the local German Clubs.  He is a proud member if the Hermann Lodge - the oldest German Speaking lodge in the country since 1988. He has also received Lifetime Honorary Membership to the following Clubs:

Ted has graciously promoted the Philadelphia Steuben Parade and other German events in the various organizations free of charge to them for several years.  He has also helped promote the New York Steuben Parade and served as the Master of Ceremonies in 1986 and 1988.

Ted is the recipient of the German-American Friendship Award on the 40th Anniversary of the Federal Republic of Germany presented by Ambassador Juergen Ruhfuss of Washington, D.C.

Ted represented the state of New Jersey on behalf of Governor Jim Florio at the unification celebration of the two German states on October 3, 1990 in Berlin.

Ted is the recipient of the Cross of Honor "Bundes Verdienstkreuz Erste Klasse” by the Bundespraesident Weizacker in 1991.
