History of our Chorus - Page 7

baton of Dirigent Heinrich Geiger, were the Carlstadt Gemischte Chor, the BremervörderMänner- und Damenchor, the Kreutzer Damen- und Männerchor and the RSB. The Nordöstlicher (Notheastern) Sängerbund has hosted a National Sängerfest every three years and quite often the RSB took part. When the busy September schedule permitted, the RSB attended the German Heritage festival at the Arts Center in Holmdel, NJ.

Always appreciative of a good audience, the RSB has enjoyed performing for the more senior members of the community. For many years the chorus has gathered on December 26th to sing Christmas songs to the residents of the Fritz Reuter Altenheim. In 1984, the RSB presented a program of 8 songs at the Wohnstift Augustinum, a senior residence in Heidelberg. In 1994, along with the Chor Cellensia, the RSB offered a medley of songs for the entertainment of the residnets at the Wilhem-Bucholz-Stift in Wietzenbruch near Celle. Over the yeras, members of the RSB have also sung live on the radio during the annual fundraising marathon for station WFUV which carries German language broadcasts.

Annual Events

The members have demonstrated their theatrical flair at the Springshow and many performances are memorable. Early on, the comic female character presented by Hilmar Homberger drew gales of laughter. Each show has had a theme. In 1986, "Mädchen im Gesang" (Girls in Song), Mary-Alice Kattwinkel, beneath a large, fabulously feathered hat, stole the show with "Hello Dolly". "In the Gay 90's" Mary-Alice and Walter Kattwinkel, riding around the dance floor of the grand ballroom" on a bicycle built for two" then delighted the audience with both verses of "Daisy, Daisy". It was the athletic Hans Matz, swinging from a high bar, who appeared when Walter Kattwinkel sang "The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze". The entertainment and props have been impressive: "Fiesta Mexicana" had a genuiune Mariachi band and at "1,001 Arabian Nights", the resourceful Roy Johnson got a full-sized replica of a camel for the evening while, thanks to Karl Schlotfeldt, exotic belly dancers enthralled the audience. In 1992 Magda Heinrich and Martha Matz were the loveliest flappers in "The Roaring Twenties". With spirit and in costume, the RSB has presented a Springshow every year. Among the themes have been Gruß an den Rhein, Studentenabend, Seemans Abend, "Hawaiian Night", "April in Paris" and most recently, "A Night in Vienna".

Later in the spring and on a smaller scale, the more casual Weinfest has become an anuual tradition started in the past quarter century. An evening affair, it's delightful wine and cheese party, enliven by the chorus. Amid the tasteful decorations carrying out the Weinfest theme, there's dance music, Schunkellieder, raffle prizes, and of course, der Wein.
